A monkey and Peanuts : ลิงกำถั่ว

The tale from the Lord Buddha Once upon a time in India, monkeys caused a lot of trouble for villagers as it liked to steals fruits in their gardens. So the villagers thought of a way to catch it by making a wooden box that had a small hole on one side that’s just large enough for a monkey's hand. And in that box, they put peanuts which was the monkey's favorites One day, a monkey came and noticed there were peanuts in that wooden box. With greed, it inserted its hand into the wooden box and grabbed peanuts. When it pulled its hand back, the hand full of peanuts could not get out of the box as the fistful of peanuts was too large for the hole. It was stuck! So the villagers came to catch it because it could not flee while its hands appeared to be trapped in the wooden box. The monkey did not realize that if it released the peanuts, it could take its hand out of the box as easy as when it first stick its hand in. There are so many sufferings around us and more importantly within us. We are occupied with wanting, needing, loving and hating something or someone. We know that these desires make us suffer. Yet we keep on wanting, needing, loving hating all the same. Just like the monkey holding on to the peanuts, instead of letting them go. Once a bad thing happened to us, we feel hurt. Then that feeling died. And every time we think of it; we revisit the scene, allowing something that is in the past to keep on hurting us over and over again. เรื่องเล่าจากพระพุทธองค์ กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้วในอินเดีย ลิงเป็นไม้เบื่อไม้เมากับชาวบ้าน เพราะชอบขโมยผลไม้ในสวน ชาวบ้านจึงคิดวิธีจับลิง โดยใช้กล่องไม้ซึ่งมีฝาด้านหนึ่งเจาะรูเล็กๆ พอให้ลิงสอดมือเข้าไปได้ ในกล่องมีถั่วซึ่งเป็นของโปรดของลิงวางไว้เป็นเหยื่อล่อ วันดีคืนดี ลิงมาที่สวน เห็นถั่วอยู่ในกล่อง ก็เอามือล้วงเข้าไปหยิบถั่ว แต่พอถอนมือออกมาก็ติดฝากล่อง เพราะกำมือของลิงนั้นใหญ่กว่าฝากล่องที่เจาะไว้ ลิงพยายามดึงมือเท่าไรก็ไม่ออก พอชาวบ้านมาจับ ก็ปีนหนีขึ้นต้นไม้ไม่ได้ เพราะมีมือเปล่าอยู่ข้างเดียว สุดท้ายก็ถูกคนจับได้ ลิงหาได้เฉลียวใจไม่ว่า เพียงแค่มันคลายมือออกเท่านั้น มันก็เอาตัวรอดได้ แต่เพราะยึดถั่วไว้แน่น ไม่ยอมปล่อย จึงต้องเอาชีวิตเข้าแลก มีหลายสิ่งหลายอย่างในชีวิตที่เราใฝ่ฝันอยากได้ จนถึงกับยึดไว้อย่างเหนียวแน่น เวลาประสบปัญหา เพียงแค่คลายสิ่งที่ติดยึดนั้นเสียบ้าง ปัญหาก็คลี่คลาย แต่เป็นเพราะเราไม่ยอมปล่อย จึงเกิดผลเสียตามมาอย่างมากมาย...ไม่คุ้มกับสิ่งที่ติดยึด ปัญหาทั้งหลายในชีวิตนั้น ถ้าเรารู้จักปล่อยวางเสียบ้าง มันก็จะบรรเทาไปได้เยอะ บ่อยครั้งการปล่อยวางไม่เพียงแต่เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการแก้ปัญหาเท่านั้น หากแต่เป็นทางออกจากปัญหาเลยทีเดียว ในหลายๆกรณี ความทุกข์ไม่ได้มาจากไหน หากมาจากการยึดติดไม่ยอมปล่อย ดั่งเจ้าลิงหวงถั่วนั่นเอง
