Urgent ! Planes crash into NY's World Trade Center
Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan on Tuesday in what President Bush called "an apparent terrorist attack on our country." About an hour after those crashes, an explosion forced the evacuation of the Pentagon in Washington and a fire erupted on the Washington Mall. Another fire was reported at the State Department. The White House and other government buildings were also evacuated. In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated.
Witnesses told CNN that a helicopter circled the Pentagon and disappeared on the other side of the building shortly before the explosion and fireball. The Federal Aviation Administration shut down all airports in the country.
Bush, in Sarasota, Florida, where he was to speak on education reform, cancelled those plans. "Today we've had a national tragedy," Bush said from Sarasota, Florida, where he had been reading to children at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. He described the incidents as an "apparent terrorist act." The president said he was returning immediately to Washington and had authorized a full investigation to find those responsible.
Harrowing images
Shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday morning a plane smashed into the northern tower of the World Trade Center. About 20 minutes later, the second plane hit the southern tower, the harrowing images transmitted live on television. As television cameras transmitted the aftermath of the first crash, smoke and flames billowing from near the top of the northern tower, the video captured a second plane slamming into the southern tower.
The horrific images of the second crash were caught in live video. At about 10 a.m., the south tower disappeared behind a huge plume of billowing smoke, apparently indicating part of the building collapse. Witnesses said they saw people jumping from the building before the collapse.
The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city. Sources told CNN that one of the planes was an American Airlines Boeing 767 that had been hijacked after take-off from Boston.
Tons of debris
The scene on the ground was chaotic, witnesses said. Sean Murtagh, a CNN vice president, was in an office near the World Trade Center towers at the time of the first crash. He witnessed the crash. Murtagh said he saw the plane "teetering back and forth, wingtip to wingtip" before the plane smashed into the side of the building.

Terror attacks hit U.S.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings.
In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.
Reports said oen plane appeared to be an American Airlines Boeing 767 that had been hijacked after take-off from Boston. American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents," one leaving Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard, and the second leaving Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles
About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, part of which later collapsed.
United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial reports indicated no survivors. It was not known if this was connected to the attacks.
The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington evacuated.
In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports.
All international flights were diverted to Canada.
Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.
President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to Washington, calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy."
In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York evacuated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated. CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary.
The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city.
New York's Bellevue Hospital was designated command central for handling the catastrophe. Several hospitals have already reported receiving victims with burns and head injuries.
U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.

สำนักข่าวซีเอ็นเอ็นรายงานว่า ในช่วงเวลาประมาณ 9.00 น. ตามเวลาสหรัฐอเมริกา หรือประมาณ 20.00 น. ตามเวลาในประเทศไทยที่ผ่านมา ได้มีเครื่องบินสองลำบินชนตึกเวิลด์เทรด เซ็นเตอร์ อดีตตึกที่สูงที่สุดในโลก โดยเครื่องบินลำแรกเป็นเครื่องบินโบอิ้ง 767 มีกำหนดบินจากบอสตัน-ลอสแองเจลิส ถูกไฮแจ๊คจากเมืองบอสตัน และบินเข้าชนตึกเวิลด์เทรด เซ็นเตอร์อย่างจัง ก่อให้เกิดการระเบิดและไฟไหม้ลุกท่วมทันทีที่ชั้น 110 ซึ่งเป็นบนสุดของตึกนี้ จากนั้นอีกประมาณ 8 นาทีต่อมา ได้มีเครื่องบินอีกลำหนึ่ง ซึ่งยังไม่ทราบว่าถูกไฮแจ๊คมาจากที่ใด บินเข้าชนตาม ชิ้นส่วนของเครื่องบินทั้งสองลำกระจัดกระจายเกลื่อนเป็นบริเวณกว้างกว่า 3 ไมล์ ขณะนี้ยังไม่มียอดผู้เสียชีวิตและผู้ที่ได้รับบาดเจ็บที่แน่นอน แต่คาดว่ามีจำนวนไม่ต่ำกว่าพัน เพราะเป็นช่วงเวลาที่เริ่มการทำงานแล้ว
ขณะเดียวกัน มีรายงานด่วนแจ้งเข้ามาว่า ได้มีเครื่องบินอีกลำหนึ่ง พุ่งเข้าชนตึกเพนตากอน ซึ่งเป็นที่ทำการของกระทรวงกลาโหมสหรัฐ ก่อให้เกิดไฟลุกท่วม เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐบาลได้อพยพคนออกจากเพนตากอนและตึกทำเนียบขาวฝั่งตะวันตกซึ่งอยู่ไม่ห่างจากตึกเพนตากอนเป็นการด่วน แต่ยังไม่มีรายงานข่าวว่ามียอดผู้บาดเจ็บและเสียชีวิตกี่ราย
รายงานข่าวแจ้งมาว่า ขณะเกิดเหตุนายจอช ดับเบิลยู บุช ประธานาธิบดีสหรัฐอเมริกา อยู่ที่รัฐฟลอริดา แต่ได้รับแจ้งเหตุเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว และได้เปิดแถลงข่าวอย่างเป็นทางการว่าได้ประสานงานกับเอฟบีไอ และหน่วยงานต่างๆ เพื่อสืบหากลุ่มผู้ก่อการร้ายในครั้งนี้ รวมทั้งได้สั่งการให้ระดมความช่วยเหลือแก่ผู้ประสบเคราะห์กรรมอย่างเต็มที่
ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานต่อว่า ขณะนี้ทางการสหรัฐสั่งปิดอุโมงค์เดินรถต่างๆ รวมทั้งสนามบินทั่วประเทศ ห้ามทำการบินใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น และยังขอความร่วมมือจากสนามบินทั่วโลกด้วย ส่งผลให้การคมนาคมทั่วโลกเป็นอัมพาตชั่วขณะ พร้อมกันนี้ได้สั่งปิดตลาดหุ้นทุกตลาดด้วย เป็นผลให้เศรษฐกิจของโลกหยุดชะงักลงเช่นเดียวกัน ทั้งนี้ การก่อวินาศกรรมในครั้งนี้เป็นการก่อวินาศกรรมที่เรียกว่าการระเบิดแบบพลีชีพ และนับเป็นหายนะครั้งยิ่งใหญ่ของสหรัฐอเมริกา อย่างไรก็ตาม ขณะนี้ยังไม่มีผู้ก่อการร้ายกลุ่มใดออกมาประกาศความรับผิดชอบ

ข้อความ : ททท.เร่งตรวจสอบว่ามีคนไทยในอาคารเวิลด์ เทรด
นายภราเดช พยัฆวิเชียร ผู้ว่าการการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย กล่าวว่า ขณะนี้กำลังประสานทุกทาง ที่สามารถตรวจสอบข่าวทั้งกงสุลใหญ่ ในนิวยอร์ค ญาติและครอบครัวของเจ้าหน้าที่ ททท. ที่อยู่ในนิวยอร์ค แต่การติดต่อไปลำบากมาก เนื่องจากการสื่อสารระหว่างทั่วโลกไปนิวยอร์คติดขัดไปหมด และขณะนี้ได้ประสานสำนักงาน ททท.ในลอสแองเจลิส ให้ช่วยประสานอีกทางหนึ่งเพราะง่ายกว่า
สำหรับสำนักงาน ททท.ในนิวยอร์คอยู่ชั่น 37 อาคารเวิล์ดเทรดเซนเตอร์ มีเจ้าหน้าที่จากส่วนกลางไป 2 คน ที่เหลือเป็นชาวต่างประเทศ 4-5 คน โดยหัวหน้าสำนักงาน ททท.ขณะนี้ คือนายเศรษฐพันธ์ พุทธนี เดินทางกลับมาราชการที่ประเทศไทย เหลือเพียงผู้ช่วยสำนักงาน ททท.เพียงคนเดียว คือนางน้ำฝน บุญวัฒน์ ซึ่งปกติไปทำงานเช้ามาก แต่ติดต่อไปที่บ้านแล้วไม่อยู่ก็จะพยายามต่อไป

(ABCNEWS) In a horrific sequence of destruction, two hijacked planes crashed into both towers of the World Trade center in New York City within minutes of each other today, causing both to collapse within an hour of the attack. A witness also reported seeing a plane crash into the Pentagon. Terrorism is suspected. President Bush called the events a "national tragedy" as an emergency government crisis team rallied in Washington D.C.
Shortly after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the southern tower, Two World Trade Center collapsed in what witnesses described as a demolition crew operation, at about 10 a.m. ET. At 10:30 a.m. ET, the northernmost tower, One World Trade Center, also collapsed.
Part of the Pentagon also collapsed after a plane crashed into it shortly after the two disasters in New York.
There were no immediate details available on casualties, but thousands of people work in the buildings affected.
The West Wing of the White House and the Capitol have both been evacuated, and the Federal Aviation Administration issued an order that no plane was allowed to take off anywhere in the country. All military bases were put on Threatcon Alpha, the highest level of alert, after the attacks, which came without any warning.
At least one military fighter jet patrolled the skies above Manhattan this morning in the wake of the tragedy.
A large plane also crashed in western Pennsylvania, but authorities could not say whether it was related to the crashes in New York and Washington.
Officials at Somerset County Airport say the plane, believed to be a Boeing 767, went down just north of the airport, which is about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
Protecting the White House
"Today we've had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on this country," President Bush said.
Police in Washington blocked off a two-block perimeter around the White House.
Agents with automatic weapons and machine guns were trying to move tourists out of the area, locking down entire buildings around the White House.
Cell phones may have been deliberately turned off by servers because of fear that cell phones could be used to detonate a bomb.
There were no immediate reports of how many were injured or killed or the extent of damages at the twin towers, or at the Pentagon.
'Unbelievable, Unbelievable, Unbelievable'
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat condemned the aircraft attacks, shortly after an anonymous caller told Abu Dhabi television that a radical Palestinian group was responsible for the attacks. The group later denied any involvement.
"I send my condolences, the condolences of the Palestinian people to American President Bush and his government and to the American people for this terrible act," Arafat told reporters in Gaza. "We completely condemn this serious operation...We were completely shocked. It's unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable."
A government source requesting anonymity told ABCNEWS that the FBI was investigating reports of three plane hijackings. One of the flights was American Airlines flight 11, which departed from Boston's Logan International Airport at 8 a.m. bound for Los Angeles.
"It's simply a jetliner, it's extremely reliable flown by two [people], could have been three in the cockpit," ABCNEWS aviation expert John Nance said of the Boeing 767, the plane hijacked from Boston. "The door is flimsy - anyone who wants to get through that door can get through that door."
Nationwide Alert
All New York City area airports were closed down shortly after the second WTC crash, and armed military aircraft imposed a no-fly zone around the city to prevent further attacks.
In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated and the police department went on heightened alert.
"Usually the building is so full of activity, and now there's no one in the hallways. It's creepy," Cathy Grable, a 31-year-old interior designer, told The Associated Press.
Witnesses speaking in the moments after the first crash told WABC that the first plane seemed to try to avoid the northern tower, One World Trade Center, but could not, plowing into the top floors of the north side of the northernmost tower at about 8:48 a.m. ET.
As television camera crews filmed the billowing black smoke, a second plane, which appeared to be a Boeing 737, flew toward the towers from the west and crashed into the southern tower, Two World Trade Center, about 20 to 25 floors from the top.
The witnesses described the first plane as a small twin-engine passenger jet. The witnesses said it appeared that most of the jet stuck inside the building.
"Papers were billowing down and it looked like the wing crashed down to the street causing a panic on the highway and cars hit each other. People were in a panic. Things look in better control now," a witness from the Dow Jones offices in the neighboring World Financial Center said.
'Flew Right Through the Building'
Police, fire and emergency personnel were already on the scene attempting to deal with the first disaster when the second plane struck.
Jennifer Tammi, 33, a doctoral student taking an elevated subway train from her home in Brooklyn to Columbia University in upper Manhattan, was watching the smoke from the first explosion when she saw the second plane hit the other tower.
"I was looking at the smoke and saw a plane heading low over lower Manhattan," she said. "It banked and headed straight for the middle of the other tower. It looked like it flew right through the building."
Before they collapsed, large holes were visible in sides of the 110-story buildings, landmark twin towers, which were struck by terrorist bombers in February 1993.
The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke, and thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower.
Commodity trading in the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) shut down after the crashes.
Brokers said business in NYBOT, which is located in the WTC complex and trades raw sugar, coffee, cocoa, cotton and orange juice, has been suspended.
The World Trade Center bombing on Feb. 26, 1993, left six people dead and injured more than 1,000 others.
In 1945, an Army Air Corps B-25, a twin-engine bomber, crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building in dense fog.
